SOJOURN STRATEGIES REFLECTS ON GROUNDBREAKING WORK UPLIFTING BLACK, BROWN, & OVERLOOKED COMMUNITIES IN 2024

On the eve of a historic election year, Sojourn Strategies reflects on our work leading a transformative movement to bring the voices of Black, Latine, young, and often overlooked voters to the forefront of the democratic process. Through strategic initiatives, groundbreaking research, and innovative community partnerships, we have empowered communities across the country and in critical states to participate fully in the upcoming election, reclaiming a process that has historically marginalized them.

“At Sojourn Strategies, we believe that democracy thrives when every voice can be heard—especially those that traditional politics too often leaves out,” said Katrina Gamble, Founder and CEO. “This election cycle, we have been squarely focused on championing the power of communities who are stepping up to shape their future, from young multiracial voters to those who have been ignored.”

Our groundbreaking Black Values Research, a multi-year study commissioned by the Democracy and Power Innovation Fund, provided unprecedented insights into Black voters, particularly those disillusioned by the political process. For years, the political industry has attempted to understand the growing disengagement among Black voters, and Black Values Research identified five distinct identities within the electorate. Sojourn conducted multiple rounds of research in Ohio to better understand the group we coined the Rightfully Cynical. With a deep understanding of the justified cynicism many Black voters felt, this research shed light on how to re-engage these voices and has been used by grassroots organizations across the country, including in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

Additionally, our CEO co-founded the Voter Justice Project, a national initiative focused on voting rights restoration for formerly incarcerated people. More than 19 million formerly incarcerated people who are eligible to vote often remain on the sidelines due to misinformation and fear. Through our work with the Voter Justice Project, we have provided critical resources and support to justice-impacted led organizations to engage tens of thousands of eligible justice-impacted voters across the country, including Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, New Mexico, and Nevada.

Whether innovative research or strategic initiatives, Sojourn Strategies has been squarely focused on moving us toward a more inclusive and equitable democracy. We’re proud of the impact we’ve had so far and look forward to continuing that work after Election Day.
